Become a Nipper
Nippers is a junior activities program that introduces children aged 5 to 14 to Surf Life Saving. It’s a great way for children to make friends, be active and learn how to enjoy the beach safely. Nippers first learn about surf awareness and safety. As they progress through the various age groups, nippers will undergo lessons in wading, running, ocean swimming, board paddling and lifesaving skills as well as learning the basics of resuscitation and first aid.

2026/2027 Nippers season runs from 1st November to March 28th, and held at 10am-12pm Sunday morning.

Nippers Session for U6,U7,U8 & U9 run from 10am – 11am
Nippers Session for U10,U11,U12,U13 & U14 run from 10am – 12noon
An extra training session will be offered to children interested in competition on a Friday evening from 4pm – 5pm

Send us an email for any enquiries, or Call our Nipper coordinators Sara or Craig Hamann on 0444541127.

Please arrive 15 minutes early for each session. Upon arrival children and parents will gather Infront of the club on the grass area for a briefing and to put on their high vis. Pink vest and age appropriate cap. Please remember if your child is 8 years or younger you must accompany them down onto the beach. All parents are encouraged to join in and help.
Each session will include a range of beach and water activities tailored to age and ability, encouraging everyone to participate.

HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED?
Parent help is always needed, very much valued and actively encouraged at Somerset SLSC. Each year we call on Nipper parents and guardians to get on board as we cannot run the program without your help.
We need parents to volunteer to assist both in and out of the water organising activities, getting equipment in and out, ensuring equipment is washed and put away, carrying drink bottles, hats and sunscreen, washing sand out of eyes, watching and helping whenever children need a helping hand. There are BBQs to run and if you hold an RSA please volunteer to help on the bar at events.
Parents of children U6, U7, U8 and U9 must be on the beach with their child at all times incase of an emergency. Parents of older children must remain at the club or on the beach helping incase of an emergency. Nippers is not a ‘Drop and Go’ session.

Surf Boat Rowing
Surf boat racing is one of the most spectacular events in Surf Life Saving competitions. Each surfboat is manned by four rowers and is steered by a sweep. Crews compete head to head racing from the beach, rowing through the surf into open water and turning at a designated set of turning buoys or cans. After rounding the cans, the crews race back to the beach each keeping in their lane or alley. As the surfboat nears the beach the aim is to catch a wave and surf to shore whilst the sweep steers the boat to keep it upright and on the face of the wave.
Somerset Surf Club are really wanting interested people in rowing, for fun, exercise or competition. Send us an email for more information, and keep an eye on our socials for upcoming open days and training sessions.
Current senior training days are Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm, and Sunday from around 9.30 or 10am. See you there!
