Somerset Surf Club Story

Before the Somerset Surf Club was established in 1969 there was a local Swim Club who met at the old diving board on the Cam to swim and race. The Surf Club was formed because of a double drowning fatality in the Cam river.
A Ladies group formed in 1969 to help provide necessary equipment to start the club and the council allocated $25,000 to construct a new clubhouse. The clubhouse was opened at the first official carnival held in 1971.
The first nippers group started in 1975.
In 1979 the second story of the club was finished and offered facilities for the club and community to hire.
Two Somerset Surf Club members won the Tasmanian Surf Lifesaver of the Year Award in 1984 and 1985, were Dale Cumming and Eric Smith, and in 1990, Karen Paine won Junior Surf Lifesaver of the year.
Today we are a small club where everyone is welcome. We attend statewide carnivals with junior and senior participants, we continue to train and learn more skills, we have nippers training, bronze medallion training, boaties, ski training, casual catchups, gym training, function hire.
Somerset Surf Club is a volunteer community organisation who proudly patrols Somerset Beach, the surrounds, and the wider community. Please consider joining us and help us continue keep our community safe.
